About this event
As one of the best early warning indicators of insulation degradation in High Voltage (HV) assets, the utilisation of on-line Partial Discharge (PD) monitoring technology aids the recognition of assets in poor condition and localisation of the root cause before taking remedial action to efficiently return them to service.
The inclusion of the latest continuous on-line PD monitoring technology in a standardised Digital Substation design and how such data can be correlated with operational and ambient parameters to provide a holistic condition assessment of the HV network whilst in-service. Attendees will learn about the importance of correlating continuous on-line PD measurement data with data from operational and ambient monitoring devices.
Key takeaways
-
Correlating such parameters can provide more context to on-line PD measurements
-
The factors affecting the insulation condition of HV assets
-
Information on such relationships can be used to inform more detailed conclusions, which can ultimately lead to more targeted remedial actions, including visual inspections and preventative maintenance works
Further information
The main aim of the Digital Substations project was to use condition monitoring technologies that can be integrated with SCADA systems to improve asset management capabilities, avoid catastrophic equipment failures, deliver a major increase to the reliability and efficiency of HV networks and above all else, improve the safety of on-site personnel through the use of a condition-based maintenance programme. This project involved the deployment of a portable continuous on-line PD monitoring system, which was used to continuously acquire PD data over a 6-month period from permanently installed PD sensors on 4x 11 kV circuits in the same substation. An example will be shown of a defect being discovered using such data, with effective remedial action then taken.

Speakers
Luke Gerhard
On-Line Condition Monitoring Specialist, Western Power
Luke obtained an Advanced Diploma from South Metropolitan College of TAFE in 2012 & a Certificate III in Electrical Trades in 2004. Luke joined Western Power as an Electrical Apprentice in 2000, and he has since obtained comprehensive knowledge across all aspects of transmission utility. Since 2005, Luke has performed High Voltage Testing of all plants within substations ranging from transformers to switchboards to cables, including routine testing, commissioning and investigative testing. In his most recent role as Senior HV Technician, Luke has focused on online condition monitoring, including installation, maintenance, and analysis of data from a vast array of different monitors available in the industry.
Jamie Howarth
On-Line Condition Monitoring Specialist, HVPD
Jamie received a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Trafford College in 2016. Since joining HVPD as an apprentice in 2012, Jamie has constructed and tested HVPD’s on-line PD testing and monitoring products as part of the Production Department. In 2014, he became an on-site Test & Installation Engineer in HVPD’s Field Test Services Department before transitioning to a technical sales role in the Commercial Department in 2016. Firstly, he focused on HVPD’s operations across the UK & Ireland before going on to drive HVPD’s global business development efforts in South America, South East Asia and Australia. Across the ANZ region, Jamie presently manages HVPD Australia’s operations in both day-to-day and future business development capacities.
