Bushfire risk mitigation

The risk of a bushfire is front and centre for many in Australia as major incidents continue to occur. Bushfires can be both caused by and greatly affect the operation of electricity networks. This sessions brings three leading experts in bushfire risk mitigation from around Australia. The talk will cover methods to assess risk, respond to incidents and generally ensure that the effects of bushfire around electricity networks can be managed. Join us if you want to learn more about what the latest approaches are from clever equipment to advanced data analytics.

Nominations are requested from EESA NSW/ACT members by 5 PM Tuesday 14 September 2021. You can complete the Nomination Form and email it to the NSW/ACT Chapter Chair – Terry Lampard at terrence.lampard@bigpond.com.

The EESA NSW/ACT Chapter will elect the 2022 EESA NSW/ACT Chapter committee at the 2021 EESA NSW/ACT Chapter AGM.

The AGM will precede the technical presentation.

Frank Crisci

Manager Emergency Management at SA Power Networks

As an Electrical Engineer with over 39 years in power industry, his achievements include:

  • Project managing a 4 year program to convert bare conductor to insulated conductor
  • Establishment of Network Operations Centre – centre of network control at SA Power Networks
  • Development of SA Power Networks’ Bushfire Risk Management programs
  • Cost-Benefit Analysis framework to evaluate bushfire risk mitigation options

With CSIRO he has co-authored the following papers:

  • Optimal Placement of Insulated Cable to Reduce Bushfire Threat
  • Managing the potential for electricity distribution systems to start bushfires

His current responsibilities include:

  • developing strategies to mitigate powerline fire start risk
  • Coordinating SA Power Networks response to emergencies with emergency services organisations

Martin Van Der Linde

Martin van der Linde is the General Manager - Marketing for international switchgear manufacturing and technology company NOJA Power. A current MBA candidate of the University of Queensland Business School, Martin completed his Bachelor of Engineering majoring in Power Systems at UQ in 2013. Martin was involved with the Fire Risk Mitigation program implemented in Victoria following the Royal Commission, including participation in protection algorithm development for Reclosers under REFCL network operation. Martin is a participating member of Cigre contributing on Fire Risk Mitigation, and is an active member of Engineers Australia and the Electric Energy Society of Australia, Martin has worked in various technical and strategic managerial roles, conducting business in 15 countries, authoring over 70 technical articles and presenting at 10 conferences.
